What a Load of Rubbish!

A reflection on our summer ‘23 exhibition.

‘What a load of Rubbish’….it’s a term often we hear in arts and cultural venues. Sometimes it’s hard to disagree with the sentiment, at other times it reminds us of just how differently we see things. We don’t always agree with someone else’s idea of ‘good’, and they probably don’t agree with ours.

But this exhibition really was a load of rubbish! The majority of the artworks were made from the unloved things we see discarded all around us. It allowed us to see things in a different light.

Whilst the exhibition centred on thought provoking creativity, the wider theme was sustainability. If we stick to the most basic of definitions, how does today’s generation gets what it wants and needs from the world without diminishing what is handed on to the next. How well do we do that?

Our exhibition and programme of supporting events allowed visitors the chance to meet and work with artists to explore some of these key questions themselves.
